DESCRIPTION:CHILLIFUNK SESSIONS TAKES OVER THE FOX & FIRKIN \n  \n30 years of soulful music for funky people – coming to Lewisham. \n  \nThis October 22nd\, Chillifunk Records lands at the Fox & Firkin for its first takeover – celebrating three decades of independent\, soulful and underground music with a night that connects the label’s past\, present and future. \n  \nBorn in London in 1996\, Chillifunk has spent 30 years refusing to be boxed into one genre – moving through house\, soul\, funk\, jazz\, broken beat\, disco and deep underground grooves. Across those three decades\, Chillifunk has worked with an incredible family of artists\, producers and vocalists\, including Nathan Haines\, East West Connection\, Dr Bob Jones\, Phil Asher’s Restless Soul\, T. Kolai\, Verna Francis\, Sandy Mill\, DSL\, Elbert Phillips\, Vanessa Freeman and Jody Watley\, alongside international remixers including Kenny Dope\, Dennis Ferrer and Louie Vega. \n  \nThe label’s music has also been supported and championed by a serious roll call of DJs and selectors\, including François K\, DJ Spinna\, Danny Krivit\, Atjazz\, Glenn Davis\, Martin Lodge\, Rocky\, Ronnie Herel\, Sam Divine\, Sophie Lloyd and DJ Pope\, to name but a few. \n  \nFor our first Fox & Firkin session\, we’re bringing together the Chillifunk family with Rude Boy Rupert\, Lulu Levan and Tommy D\, plus very special guest Zaki from Point Blank Radio – serving up deep\, soulful selections from four DJs with decades of dancefloor history between them. \n  \nAnd it’s not just about the DJs. Gabriella Groves joins us for a special live PA\, bringing her powerful blend of soul\, Motown and R&B to the night. An accomplished vocalist who has performed at Wembley Arena and provided backing vocals for Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes and Mica Paris\, Gabriella has also performed with the ACM Gospel Choir and Urban Voices Collective. She recently featured on Love Underground’s The Journey Part 1 and has more new music forthcoming on Chillifunk Records – making her very much part of the label’s next chapter.  \n  \nFor Lulu Levan and Tommy D\, the night is particularly close to home. Both are Lewisham locals and together make up Love Underground\, whose The Journey Part 1 brings Brit-soul\, jazz\, funk and house influences firmly into the new Chillifunk era. \n  \nFrom Garage City to Pikes\, Reel People to Love Underground\, pirate radio to Point Blank\, this is generations of London club culture coming together under one roof. \n  \nChillifunk Records – soulful music for funky people.

SUMMARY:Dur-Dur Band International
DESCRIPTION:There was a time when Mogadishu\, the capital of Somalia\, was often referred to as the “pearl of the Indian Ocean.” Before Dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted in 1991 and the country plunged into civil war\, it was a beautiful\, cosmopolitan city with the nightlife and bands like Dur Dur to soundtrack it. Today\, it’s a scarred place under persistent threat from the country’s still-powerful religious militias and al-Shabaab suicide bombers. \nDur Dur Band it’s the name originally taken by 80’s Mogadishu Somalia Funk\, Disco\, Soul Band that was later disbanded in the early 90s\, unable to continue playing in their city\, Dur-Dur Band broke up and scattered abroad. Their competition did too\, and the cinemas\, studios\, hotels and theatres that once played host to their music closed\, or were forced to. In 2006\, Mogadishu was briefly dominated by Islamic extremists who attempted to outlaw music. The place where this music was made is still listed on the map as though nothing changed\, but it’s not the same city today as it was in 1987. These music recordings are a superb glimpse of what was and what’s been lost. \nDur Dur Band International as it’s known now is the regrouping of some of the original Dur Dur Band founding members such as the legendary bass player Abdillahi Ujerry\, also Mohamaed Karama\, Qomal\, Omar Teesiyow including the legendry Iftin Band musi- cians Saleh Hariri\, Nabil\, Ali Atore\, Yusuf Nagi and Said Hussein from Waaberi National Band with the phenomenon vocalist Fadumian Hilowle with a repertoire of Funky Oldies and contemporary compilations of the best in Somali Funk. \nDur Dur Band became famous 1980s in Somalia with the lead singers such as; Sahra Dawo\, Pastow\, Eddi\, Shimali\, Qoma\, Baastow and other vocalists\, and have taken by storm in Somali pop culture and were very popular in neighbouring countries: Ethiopia\, Djibouti and Kenya\, until the civil war broke out in Somali 1991\, and was later based in Addis Ababa venues\, in Ethiopia. \nMany of the Somali musicians had fled the country to seek sanctuaries outside Somali a mainly in East Africa and Europe and at the time many had been executed or killed by the religious factions for their love of music art and culture.\n*Dur Dur also means “spring” in Somali. London based 8 piece Somali Funk Band\, Dur Dur Band International is currently the only Somali Live Music Band in the world re-vived by Mr Liban Noah. And have since toured all over Europe including in the Scandinavian\, Germany\, Holland and UK. \nSomali people are oral society and often express their feelings and anxieties through poems\, singing\, dancing music and drama story telling.
