South East Special

Our much awaited South East Special celebrates the Soundsystem culture of our corner of London and its cultural impact. Joint headliner is the one and only Lez Lyrixs. He will be selecting and warming up the mic., along with bredren Kenny, from back in the day. Dr. Lez cut his teeth on the mighty Ghetto Tone Soundsystem, and sparred with all of the noteable sounds in the day.

Expect an eclectic selection of Roots Reggae and impeccable, fresh, conscious, firey lyrics. Forty years ago Lez was associated with the biggest Sounds of the day, now his erudition has earned him a Doctorate and finds him on BBC Radio 4.

Our other headliners, original sistren DJ duo Nzinga Soundz, join us for a session of vintage Roots Reggae and Lover’s Rock, in original vinyl style. During the 1980s, DJ Ade and Junie Rankin’ regularly ran things at the Four Aces, Astoria, Africa Centre and Mambo Inn. They have supported Burning Spear and the Mighty Diamonds. Also Augustus Pablo, Betty Wright and Ziggy Marley appeared on their weekly radio show on SLR.

All of the usual Deptford Dub Club crew will be along for this one. Soft Wax will be manning the wheels of steel. He’ll be joined by our resident sing-jay, the mighty Doc Murdoch. Also live and direct will be Tim Topcat ( Sax ) and Wicked Will ( Trumpet ). Live and direct, on the mic. there will also be extra special guests.

We’ve got a whole lot to celebrate. As well as our cultural roots in general, this night will see the launch of the New Cross Reggae Map, compiled by a team from Goldsmiths, led by Prof. Les Back. The video for it stars — you guessed it — Lez Lyrixs. Also we’re taking this opportunity to have a public consultation on the Battle of Lewisham mural project. So come and have your say on the design. We’ll also be discussing a proposed Rock Against Racism mural somewhere in London…
