D.D.C. – Festus Special
We are pleased and proud to announce that our headliner for January is the truly legendary Festus Coxsone. Festus moved to London in the mid 1960s and rapidly established himself on the sound system circuit. He soon became the star selector of seminal Sir Coxsone Outernational sound system. Festus developed a reputation for playing Jamaican recordings before they become available to the public, and for his skills as a consummate dub cutter. He is one of the great selectors.
Festus was born in rural St Thomas, Jamaica’s rebel parish. He was so grounded in sound system culture from his early youth, that he built a replica set from a cardboard box, at the age of ten. He remains fastidiously focused; we are honoured to have him. Expect old-school reggae and dub, as well as those legendary exclusive dub-plates. When we asked him about extending this night until 3, he said, “I am a 10 hour man.”
We will be blessed by a selection from the inimitable Dubplate Pearl. Pearl is a well respected fixture on the London reggae scene. You name a venue where memorable ravin’ happened and Pearl’s probably played there. She’s spun in combination with most selector’s you could mention too.
Resident Soft Wax will be on the decks as well. He’ll be joined by Doc Murdoch’s distinctive vocal stylings — his vocal presence has become a feature of the Deptford Dub Club. Tim Topcat on sax and Wicked Will on Trumpet. will be joining them live and direct, on the mic.. Together they’ll be playing a fresh set of Semi-live material, including fresh dub-plate action.
There’ll be a warm up selection from local hero Don d’Lion too. In traditional style, we will be playing the best in foundation Jamaican roots music: from Ska, through Rocksteady and classic, vintage Reggae, to the present. All the selectors will be digging extra deep into their musical dub-baskets for this event. An enhanced sound system is a feature of the Dub Club.
This session is bound to be really kicking; so don’t forget your dancing shoes and celebrate the rhythm. We eagerly expect this to be one of our most memorable sessions. Reach early, as we expect a road block at this convivial boozer, with hot food until 10pm and a fabulous garden.
The Deptford Dub Club happens every month, on the penultimate Saturday, from 8.00 to 3.00 and is always FREE til 9 and £3 thereafter
