Description

SE SOUNDS is back and better than ever. This time we’re diving into the soul-pop, indie and RnB. Let’s meet the artists:

Jasmine Jethwa:

Jasmine makes swaying, folk-tinged acoustic pop songs with a full voice that teems with rich emotion. Her sonic palette makes sense when she describes the music she was most interested in growing up. “The earliest memories I have are of driving down to see my grandparents, and we listened to different music in the car on my dad’s iPod,” she recalls, “There’d be David Gray, Tracy Chapman, Dido, Gipsy Kings, The Eagles – old songs, classic albums. And I feel like they went into my psyche. I’m obsessed with any kind of acoustic, well-played guitar.”

She also references her love of R&B and a current new love with Fontaines DC (“the first time I heard them they grabbed my heart; if my music does what they and other artists do for me and moves them to feel something, I’d be happy”). There is also mention of the emotional resonance of watching Bollywood films with her Gujarati grandmother back when she was a kid: “In terms of vocals, I do think that’s made a bit of an impact,” she says of those Hindi songs she internalised.

Maya Aruna:

London-based newcomer Maya Aruna is a name that’s sure to become familiar with a dreamy sound and lyricism that deftly blends reality with fantasy. Influenced by artists such as Kali Uchis, Lana Del Rey and Joy Crookes, Maya’s music serves as a lyrical diary, glancing into the complexity of the feminine experience via her pop-focused sound.

Now making her official entrance, Maya Aruna brings us her brand new debut single “desi gurl,” unveiling her soulful pop sound and firmly placing herself on the map of must-watch new artists in the UK music scene and beyond. Themed around Desi girls and Bollywood icons set against a context of self-worth and female empowerment, Maya draws from her heritage to filter her cultural roots into a modern pop sound.

Cape Orange:

Upbeat, bold and building a world of their own, Cape Orange is the electrifying melting pot of the three members’ wildly differing musical tastes. Blending the country riffs of guitarist and singer Maddie Harris, the 60s old school soul drumming of Stevie and the powerhouse vocals of singer Jen Thompson, the band dizzies audiences by bouncing them between genres, strung together by captivating lyrics and vocal harmonies.
