DJ Andy Smith presents Reach Up – Disco Wonderland

Playing a mixture of Disco, Boogie, Classic House and more; come on down to see DJ Andy Smith and Nick Halkes evoking the spirit of legendary NYC clubs such as Paradise Garage and Studio 54.

The Fox and Firkin will be fully decked out with disco gear – just enough to help you shine on the dancefloor!

Some background information:

DJ Andy Smith and Nick Halkes (aka Nick Reach Up) drop 80s disco, boogie and proto house,evoking the spirit of legendary NYC clubs such as Paradise Garage and Studio 54. They’ll dip into the rich soundtrack that emerged as the 70s turned into the 80s forming the DNA of today’s club music and mesh the set with the freshest productions, remixes and re-edits that they have sourced or can find!

As schooldays best friends Andy and Nick ran a mobile disco together and hunted for bargain 12 inch vinyl in their childhood home town of Portishead near Bristol. At this point they had no idea that Andy would supply beats and tour the world with Portishead before becoming one of the top 100 djs in the world nor that Nick would go on to set up the XL and Positiva labels becoming one of the UKs most respected dance and electronic music industry executives.

Reach Up launched more than five years ago at London basement venue The Waiting Rooms and soon after appeared at Carl Cox’s night at Space, Ibiza where they played for three seasons on the bounce and then also began packing out their monthly London residency at Peckham’s South London Soul Train (hosted at the legendary Bussey Building).The chaps 2018 Summer festival tourtook in Bestival, Boardmasters, Eastern Electrics, Kendall Calling, Bluedot and an 8 hour take over at Festival No6. 2019 and 2020 saw them spread the goodvibes in Lisbon, Berlin and back out on the festival circuit at Shindig, Beautiful Days and beyond.

Despite knowing each other for decades, maybe this is still just the start for Nick and Andys Reach Up Disco Wonderland adventure?!

The Deptford Dub Club, will be seeing in the festive season in reggaematic, Soundsystem style. On this night we’ll be spinnin’ classic, vintage music of Jamaican origin, from Ska, Rocksteady and deep roots Reggae stretchin’ right through to, as yet unreleased, modern exclusives.

This Xmas Special promises to be an historic occasion, as it features the legendary Neville King on the wheels of steel. The renowned producer was born in St James, Jamaica. Neville’s Soundsystem had long residencies in Brixton, Tooting, Peckham and Streatham during the 1970s. During those times he was a mentor to Blacker Dread, Levi Roots and David Rodigan.

Neville King launched his own label in London in 1976 and quickly struck gold. He issued exceptional roots material by Prince Lincoln and the Royal Rasses and Jacob Miller. Neville also released his own lover’s rock productions. His works, on the King and City label, by local heroes One Blood are particularly sought after; “Be Thankful” having assumed classic status. A great friend of the D.D.C., Mr. King’s work holds a special place for us.

Our Christmas shows together have become a favourite fixture in the calendar so all of the usual D.D.C. massive will be along for this one. Early on, club stalwart Danny Spartacus of the great Spartacus Sound will be personing the decks in fine style. Resident selector Soft Wax will be joined by a host of special guests. Following the success of our semi-live sessions, we will be welcoming back our fine, horns section led by Wild Will ( trumpet ), live and direct. We’ll also be featuring our mighty Singjay Doc Murdoch on live vocals and guest vocalists, the fabulous Sandeva.

Full details of the line-up, including special guests, on the mic,and club related, party favours, will follow in the fullness. Our seasonal specials are always killas, we expect this to be one of our most memorable sessions. Put on your dancing shoes, come on down and get your mojo working early for Christmas.
