SUMMARY:The Big Firkin Band + The Soul Bones Shout Band
DESCRIPTION:A unique double-bill of London’s finest players running from day-night\, and it’s still free entry!  \nThe Big Firkin Band (15:30 – 18:00) \nIt’s the Fox and Firkin’s very own bespoke Big Band! That is big\, and it’s a band. \nThe Big Firkin Band is a collective of world class jazz musicians\, based in Lewisham and South East London\, who come together once a month to perform classic Big Band music made famous by the great bands of Duke Ellington\, Count Basie\, Buddy Rich\, Thad Jones\, Stan Kenton and Woody Herman. \nExpect to hear the greatest tunes from the golden age of jazz and swing performed by the best musicians in London\, all in a relaxed and comfortable fashion at The Fox & Firkin on a Sunday afternoon. \nEvery 2nd Sunday of the month\, 3.30 – 6pm. Food available. Family and dog friendly! \nThe Soul Bones Shout Band (18:30 – 21:30) \nThe Soul Bones are inspired by the trombone ‘shout bands’ that play in churches in the USA:  Massed groups of trombones\, with sousaphone and drums\, that play gospel music.  The sound is powerful and inspiring.  Because the bands largely perform in churches for religious occasions\, and there have been limited recordings the music isn’t as widely known as the brass bands from the New Orleans tradition.  There are no bands like it performing in the UK\, so we realised the only way to experience the sound was to form a band.\n\nGraham Hughes has gathered together a group of a dozen or so leading trombone players from London to create his own version of a trombone shout band.  The music is perfect for dark winter nights when you need something to raise your spirits.  The Soul Bones are non-religious – we only wish to convert our listeners to the positivity and joy of massed trombones and great live music.  We guarantee you won’t hear anything else like it in London!

SUMMARY:An Evening of Stan Getz & João Gilberto
DESCRIPTION:An Evening of Stan Getz / João Gilberto performed By Mario Bakuna Band\nFebruary 5th\,\nDoors: 7.30 \nMario Bakuna Band invites the audience to celebrate two of the most important artists of all time: the American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto in a tribute to the iconic album Getz/Gilberto. \nGetz/Gilberto was recorded in 1963 and is considered the album that popularised bossa nova worldwide and is one of the best-selling jazz records of all time\, selling over one million copies. It was widely acclaimed by music critics\, received the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album\, and also became the first non-American album to win Album of the Year\, in 1965.\nIn an evening full of harmonic richness\, Mario Bakuna Band will transport the audience on an incredible journey through one of our most treasured musical pieces. \n \nMario Bakuna is a Brazilian composer\, arranger\, vocalist\, and guitarist\, bringing over 25 years of musical artistry to audiences worldwide\, currently based in London\, UK. Well known for his deep exploration of traditional Brazilian rhythms\, samba\, jazz\, and bossa nova\, Mario captures the spirit of Brazilian swing\, blending it with refined jazz colours in both his original compositions and fresh arrangements of works by iconic artists such as Tom Jobim\, Dorival Caymmi\, Paulo Moura\, and João Donato. \nSince moving to Europe to deepen his artistic research and expand his horizons\, Mario has become a prominent figure in the UK’s Brazilian jazz scene — a key reference for the fusion of Brazilian music and contemporary jazz. His captivating performances have taken him far beyond London\, with tours across more than 20 European countries\, as well as Brazil\, Canada\, Madagascar\, Egypt\, Kazakhstan\, Azerbaijan\, Kaliningrad\, and Taiwan. Over the years\, he has built a distinctive international career\, enchanting audiences in both intimate jazz clubs and on grand festival stages around the world. From performing for 3\,000 people in Azerbaijan and 7\,000 in Kaliningrad to achieving a record audience of 150\,000 people at the Taichung Jazz Festival in Taiwan\, Mario has reached milestones that reflect the universal appeal and emotional depth of his performances. \nDriven by a passion for musical exploration\, Mario has collaborated with artists including Jean Toussaint\, Alain Jean-Marie\, Liam Noble\, Edmundo Carneiro\, Guinga\, Cacau Queiroz\, Ricardo dos Santos\, Daniel Jobim\, Nelson Ayres\, Robertinho Silva\, and Filó Machado.\nHis acclaimed albums Where Rio de Janeiro Meets Bahia and Brazilian Landscapes showcase his ability to fuse traditional roots with a contemporary musical sensibility. With sold-out concerts\, glowing reviews\, and growing international recognition\, Mario Bakuna continues to celebrate and expand the language of Brazilian jazz — bringing its rhythm\, warmth\, and sophistication to audiences around the globe. \n“Mario Bakuna\, a sparkling guitarist\, plays with palpable feeling – his virtuosic fluency on the fretboard is controlled and flourishes are perfectly placed. His voice has a texture like heavy cloth” – Songlines Magazine \n“Mario Bakuna\, a man who exudes music. (…) ‘vocals’ doesn’t begin to do him justice: his expressive range and the precision with which he was able to deploy it was truly the band’s fifth instrument. (…) And he did this while playing guitar with precision and finesse. (…) his solos were a further source of amazement\, his technique somewhere between finger-picking style and classical. His solo introduction to a Baden Powell number made a hash of any attempt at a definition.” – The Whitman Review\, Wakefield Jazz
