SUMMARY:Charlie Hart's Equators
DESCRIPTION:Charlie Hart’s Equators are a group of London based R’n’B/jazz musicians who love to explore the roots of the music they’ve spent a lifetime playing. \nThe music – African-leaning R‘n’B – is full blooded\, uplifting and unprocessed. Founded by multi-instrumentalist Charlie Hart\, who\nimmersed himself in R&B and African music after many years with Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chance\, the band is fronted by him along with the astonishingly dynamic sax and harp man\, Frank Mead\, known for his work with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings\, Gary Moore and many\nothers. \nThe line-up is completed by the acclaimed guitarist Jimmy Roche (East of Eden/Major Surgery)\, with a dream rhythm section comprising Roy Dodds (Fairground Attraction/Eddi Reader) on drums\, and virtuoso bassist Phil Scragg (Dudu Pukwana/Robert Plant). Charlie Hart’s Equators’ album ‘Masansani Club’ is available on Equator Records\, distributed by Cadiz. \nFor more information see www.charliehart.com

SUMMARY:Smoove & Turrell + DJ Andy Smith
DESCRIPTION:Smoove & Turrell are a British group hailing from Gateshead in the North East of England. They play a style of music they describe as “Northern Funk” – a contemporary fusion of funk\, soul\, northern soul\, hip-hop and electronica. The band is composed of Jonathan Scott Watson and singer / songwriter John Turrell. \nThe story of Smoove & Turrell began in the post millennium North East of England with a group of working class lads and a shared passion for soul. Smoove had met keyboardist Mike Porter through the local music scene in Newcastle and recruited him for his ‘Smoove Live’ project for the label Acid Jazz. Around Mike’s house one day they overheard a neighbour singing sublime melodies in his garage with friends which turned out to be none other than a young John Turrell practicing in a band called ‘The Stevies’. After a couple of further sessions ‘scouting’ him they finally knocked on the door and had a chat and hit it off straight away. \nReleased in October 2023\, Red Ellen is the seventh studio album from Geordie soul heavyweights Smoove & Turrell. Following the club-inspired success of Stratos Bleu\, which topped the UK Dance Album Chart\, Red Ellen takes a more organic\, soul-driven turn—still dancefloor-ready\, but rooted in optimism\, compassion\, and working-class realism. \n\n///\n\n\n\nAndy Smith was the first DJ to release a multi-genre mix album on a major label. When his mix-CD The Document hit the streets back in 1998\, it became the soundtrack for a generation who had heard Coldcut’s Journeys By DJs but needed to hear more.\n\n\nThis appreciation of different genres made Smith the ideal person to provide sample material for Portishead on their first two albums. He went on to make his name as the band’s international tour DJ.\n\nDoors at 8pm

SUMMARY:Deptford Dub Club
DESCRIPTION:The final instalment of our celebrations of the seminal Reggae developments of the mid 1970s will continue focusing on the flowering of Roots 50 years ago. \nOne of our closest amigos\, Ras Danny Dread\, ( also known as Ras Danny Mosiah\,) will be putting the needle to the groove on the wheels of steel\, to close the show. The mighty Danny will need no introduction to regulars at The Deptford Dub Club\, as he is a stalwart. He’s more widely known through his work with the monumental Jah Shaka Soundsystem\, over many decades. His sets are always wicked. \nDrop da Biscuit is another mainstay of the D.D.C. and is a familiar\, much respected presence on the London Revive scene. He rarely leaves his yard without the tunes that are our focus in his boxes. He also creates the popular and influential Drop da Biscuit podcasts. Soft Wax is the resident selector at the Dub Club. He remembers the release of “Natty Rebel” and “Meets the Aggrovators at the Dub Station” as life changing.  \n  \nAs ever\, the tunes will be supplemented by live action on the mic from our residents\, the mighty Singjay artist Doc Murdoc and the D.D.C. Horns\, led by Tombone and Natty. It is expected that we will have special guest singers and players live and direct\, too. Earlier in the evening we’ll be playin’ our usual eclectic mix of music of Jamaican origin including Rocksteady and Ska. \n  \nThere’ll also be live mixes from the great Prince Fatty on the desk\, throughout the session. We’re looking forward to another blinding evening inside\, with the music piped out to the glorious garden too. Come on down to our anniversary\, celebration special. Put on your dancing shoes and dance your way into “the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”. \n  \n£3 in advance | £5 on the door. \n  \nThe source waxings for this edition of “it was 50 years ago today” are U Roy’s “Natty Rebel” and Tubby’s works on the “Dub Gone Crazy” compilations.  \n  \nSelector Becca will also be spinning and is equally wedded to this era’s music and vibes.

SUMMARY:The Vanguards + DJ Garth Cartwright - Bank Holiday Blues
DESCRIPTION:Free entry for those arriving before 7pm. \nThe Vanguards are a five-piece traditional bluegrass band based in London. Since 2015\, their high lonesome three-part harmonies and instrumental prowess have been bringing audiences a taste of the hard-driving early years of this acoustic offspring of country music. As well as performing masterful interpretations of bluegrass classics\, they write and perform wholly original music which evokes the sound and feel of bluegrass music’s pioneers. They released South of the River\, their debut full-length recording featuring thirteen all-original compositions\, in 2022. \n

SUMMARY:Deptford Dub Club Open Air
DESCRIPTION:We’re staging a FREE\, full family friendly\, outdoor\, afternoon session\, in the glorious\, extensive garden. This promises to be a real historical event as it features the legendary Neville King on the wheels of steel. The renowned producer and soundsystem operator was born in St. James\, Jamaica. Neville’s soundsystem had long residencies in Brixton\, Tooting\, Peckham and Streatham during the 70s. In those days he was a mentor to David Rodigan\, Levi Roots and Blacker Dread. Neville King launched his own labels in London in 1976 and quickly struck gold. He issued exceptional roots material by Prince Lincoln and the Royal Rasses and Jacob Miller. Mr King was also one of the instigators of Lovers Rock\, releasing many of his own production in the genre. “Be Thankful” by One Blood has assumed classic status. \nThroughout proceedings our resident Sing-jay\, the mighty Doc Murdoc will be on hand to nice-up the dance. The inimitable Doctor will need no introduction to many\, as he is a stalwart of the London Reggae scene. He and the club’s resident selector\, Soft Wax\, recently supported Black Uhuru and together they’ve grace many of the capital’s stages and far beyond. For this night they will be joined by the D.D.C.s recently augmented live horn section. Now a 3 piece and including Club favourites Natty and Tombone. \nEarly in proceedings we’ll be graced by a set from Club stalwart Natty Nick. Nick is revered amongst club regulars for his lovingly selected blends of Ska\, Rocksteady and early Reggae. We’re really looking forward to hearing to what he comes up with for this Carnival Alternative special. We may well see some special guests too. Plus stalls and food including Caribbean Catering.
