‘Electrifying performances and diverse repertoire, they’ve become a staple of the region’s vibrant world music scene’

Band On The Wall

In just two years since forming in Leeds, Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas have become the leading Brazilian music band in the north of England. Their high-energy live shows, genre-spanning repertoire, and joyful carnival spirit have made them a standout act at venues and festivals across the UK.

They’ve sold out shows at Band on the Wall (Manchester), Peggy’s Skylight (Nottingham), Brudenell Social Club (Leeds), and Belgrave Music Hall (Leeds), and in 2025 completed a five-date, sold out Brazilian Carnival Tour across the North.

Led by São Paulo-born saxophonist Gustavo Andrade, the 10-piece band features some of the finest musicians from the Leeds jazz and world music scenes. Their lead vocalist Maya Blandy—a UK/Portuguese powerhouse—is also an acclaimed solo artist. Other members perform with projects such as Plantfood, Carioca Soul, Orchestra Mambo International, Tempo Feliz, Awen Ensemble, Mangorata, and Away From Home.

The Brasukas’ sound is a full-spectrum celebration of Brazilian music, with irresistible arrangements by Gustavo that draw from samba, MPB, bossa nova, samba rock, axé, forró, Brazilian soul, frevo, and Rio-style jazz-funk. Their sets feature vibrant interpretations of classics by Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil, Tim Maia, Ivete Sangalo, Tom Jobim, Alcione, Seu Jorge, Leci Brandão, Djavan, and Ed Motta.

Their shows are a true Brazilian carnival experience, often featuring special guests from the UK- Brazilian music community. Collaborators have included London-based percussionist Babo Moreno and Manchester’s renowned forró accordionist Zagotinho do Acordeon. Whether lighting up a festival stage or igniting a packed dancefloor, Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas deliver unforgettable performances that bring the healing sounds of home to the Brazilian diaspora—and introduce a legendary musical tradition to audiences across the UK.
