Janet Kay made history in 1979 with  “Silly Games,” which peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and made her the first British-born Black female artist to showcase a reggae song on Top of the Pops. Carroll Thompson burst onto the scene shortly after, releasing her million-selling, self-penned 1980 debut album Hopelessly in Love—later recognized by Mojo Magazine as the greatest Lovers Rock album of all time—which yielded enduring classics like “I’m So Sorry“.
